When in Doubt, Speak From the Heart
I recently spoke at a women’s business conference. I was asked to deliver my session twice, but I was struggling with the content. My session was titled, “Be the CEO of Your Life: 3 Ways to Be Your Own Best Personal Assistant.”
Although my career has been focused on developing relationship management software tools, first as co-inventor of ACT! and now Vipor, I felt this session was a little too bland and didn’t really come from my heart to help people build more effective relationships.
The first session went by the script, but by the end of the presentation I knew that I didn’t connect as well as I would have liked. So, I decided to change it up for my next session.
That afternoon, I started by saying that I wasn’t going to use my prepared presentation, but rather I was going to speak from my heart. I explained that being more organized and efficient wasn’t about time management; it’s about the kinds of relationship efforts that lead to greater success.
Those sessions were as different as night and day. That afternoon, I ignored the script and the slides, stood before the ballroom full of professionals, and simply spoke directly from my heart. The result? Not only a room full of applause, but a room filled with genuine connection.
You may not be standing on a stage or giving a speech, but we all have opportunities to connect with others. My advice? Just forget the script and speak from the heart!
